The countdown for travelling to Iceland has begun.

The countdown for travelling to Iceland has begun. I agree totally with what Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher, says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” But I may not totally agree his other saying, “A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” You know Lao Tzu is no ordinary traveller.

Thanks for one of my friends and colleagues Lucy. When I started reading some more information about Iceland, Lucy sent me the link of the following website:

On I HEART REYKJAVIK, you can find everything about Reykjavík and Iceland. This is the best link so far: very informative and most of the posts were written from personal experience. The site was set up by Auður Ösp, a native Icelander in her thirties, with other active contributors such as Helga and Craig. At the moment Auður and Helga are on a expedition of around Iceland in 10 days and their posts are very interesting with so many things and people to cover. I do hope things written by the locals are closer to the truth.

Don’t forget to read more to discover the element of propaganda in many travel tips and guides. Some of those online reviews with high scores are fabricated. I once checked in a family-run hotel awarded top scores in Kyoto, Japan only to find out that it was one of the dirtiest hotel I have ever come across.

Nobody really hates travel. Travelling to a new place becomes a process of knowing and learning. However, since I now live down under, every travel to another continent means taking long hours of flight in terms of the distance, not counting the cost. In this itinerary we will stop over at Helsinki, Finland; then taking another flight to Reykjavík, Iceland. The photographic gears I intend to bring to travel are:

The Leica M9 body

The Summicron-M 50 mm f/2.0

The Elmarit-M 28 mm f/2.8

The Leica SF24 mini flash

The Canon 6D body

The Canon EF 70-300 mm DO IS f/4.5-5.6

Hyperdrive Colorspace 1TB

The iPad

All these should be well packed into my old Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home camera bag. The Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home has a new design with which you can tie a tripod. The Crumpler bags are sturdy, excellent in quality. Personally I think their camera bag series is one of the best. 7 Million Dollar Home is made with light fabrics and you won’t feel sick after carrying it on your shoulder all day long.

I am considering bringing a travel tripod too. As David duChemin mentions in his blog, there is no best travel tripod. It depends very much on the photographer, type of travel and the need of supporting the camera and the lenses. I have an old Gitzo tripod but it is too heavy to carry. A monopod is almost of no use if I want to take shots in long exposure. Anyway the modern tripod built to be used for travel are mostly made with carbon fibre, which is very light in weight and can be stored in most of the cabin baggage bags.

This travel is a self-drive trip, guided by maps instead of GPS. The whole travel around Iceland will last 13 days. Then we will move over to Greenland, another destination covered with ice.

My first stopover is Hong Kong before travelling to Iceland. I will strive to keep posting my travel account on this blog although I am not quite sure how good the internet connection is available in most of the hotels.

Subscribe my latest post and you will get all my whereabout in this trip until I return home.

Have you heard of the best travel camera? I don't think it is easy to find one.

Have you heard of the best travel camera? I don’t think it is easy to find one.
Do a Google search you will be amazed how many cameras for travel are recommended. A blog written by Lexy Savvides lists several things to consider:

Compacts

Superzooms

Batteries

GPS

Warranty

Accessories

These are seemingly simple questions but no easy answers. As Bill Bryson, quoted in a blog, once said, “To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” Travel is often leading to entering a place almost unknown and meeting people highly unexpected. If you want to take nice images, you must well prepared your camera and gears in advance. Please find my thoughts below.

COMPACTS. Sizes and weight do matter, depending on how long your travel is. If you think of the cabin baggage restrictions of most airliners, you can bring nothing heavier than a compact. Then a DSLR with a standard zoom is a luxury, strictly speaking. So the mirrorless camera is getting its importance due to its smaller body and quality in the image sensor. But still, a compact camera is well fit in your pocket and ready to capture the decisive moment. Personally I think the Nikon Coolpixel A and the Ricoh GR are truly amazing compacts with excellent image quality. Their 28 mm focal length is too limited in travel. The Sony RX100 is the champion.

SUPERZOOMS. No one will deny the convenience of superzooms, especially in scenarios such as safari you do not want to risk your life to shoot the animals in close range. But I do not think I will consider any of superzoom cameras because the sizes of the image sensors are too small, unless you have no intention of making a large print. Don’t forget even the latest Sony Cyber-shot DSC HV50V featuring a zoom of 24-700 mm focal length equivalent has only a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor. Why not choose the Canon 100D package? It is a very light and decent DSLR which may reduce some weights in your travel bag.

BATTERIES. For many years, I insisted bringing a spare battery. However, I strongly recommend getting the original, instead of from a third party manufacturer although the latter sometimes does save some significant amount of money. I have never heard of any unlucky experience of using these batteries, but I always worry about the fact that using these batteries will void the warranty.

GPS. I have a mixed feeling of geotagging the locations on my images. Do I over-worry my privacy? Perhaps. But it is interesting to see where people take the photographs. It is also essential to how we can make use of images to reveal more truths.

WARRANTY. The warranty is closely related to the quality of service. However, if your camera fails to work during your travel, I don’t think you can find the service unless you are in big cities. More important is whether it is a worldwide warranty. Most of the cameras accept limited warranty such as repairs can only be done in your own country. I always bring two cameras just in case one of them does not work all of a sudden. If you have lenses to share among the two cameras that will be excellent.

ACCESSORIES. My advice is not to buy too much accessories unless you are really use your camera every day. The life cycle of a camera model is so short that I would not consider any of those non-essential items such as wide-angle lens adaptors or handgrip. Please spend the money on a decent tripod or monopod, or a software application (such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom) that can help you manipulate or process your images better.

OTHERS. For a long trip, a backup device is almost inevitable. Although it is not an issue to get a storage card with large volume, I cannot imagine you can risk losing all your images in one incident. I have looked for a good backup device until I find the Hyperdrive Colorspace.

In the meantime, the Google Map for my travel has been updated. You can see the updated version here:

I have been trying hard to include a boat trip in the West Iceland but unsuccessful. Hope I can find a solution some time later.

Finally, the best travel camera to me is the one I use every day: the Leica M9.

In three weeks, my next stop is Iceland, that is located at the far north of this world.

In three weeks, my next stop is Iceland, that is located at the far north of this world. Between Sydney, my hometown, and Reykjavik, the Iceland capital city, the distance is roughly 16605.20 km or 10318.28 miles; the bearing is NW. The population is about 319,000 on a land of 103,000 sq. km.

Little has been known to me previously about Iceland. Yes everyone should have heard about its economy. It was a thought came out of all of sudden when we started planning a cruise. Why a cruise you may ask? It is a voyage with endless supply of food and comfy accommodation, and probably doing nothing except close encounter with the glaciers and seeing iceberg floating around. It is a dream for the age and retirees. I remember some of Alaska cruises offered very competitive last minute discounts last year…

At the end Iceland is our chosen destination, because it is a big island of extremes: fire and ice: volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, coasts and the midnight sun. We are only seasonal travellers and it is important to find a place where we see the most. The joy of travel is to move, from one place to another. The beauty of travel is the journey, not the sad moment when you return home. Memories may fade, so the best way to keep it fresh is to by means of recording: images, videos and words. Moreover, don’t forget the power of the social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Tumblr. They are powerful enough to carry your message around the globe.

If you have a camera GPS embedded, you can geotag your images and show your readers or friends with references to the locations on the map. This is mostly found on many compact cameras. For the case of on some of the common DSLRs, you may have to connect a module . If you have the Canon 6D, that is already built-in.

The other alternative to keep track of everything is to create a map on your Google Map and make it available to all friends. The steps are simple, according to the tips on the site:

Logon to Google Map

Click My Places at the top left panel.

Click Create Map

Then follow the instructions there. It is quite a straightforward process. In the past I have created successfully a map showing our travel in Great Britain. It was working just like a GPS device showing the route from where to where. I have started something similar and will complete very soon. Here is what I have done so far this time:

It is just a beginning and you will find some more information on this map later. But I am not sure if I have the luck of finding all the places on the Google Map.

For travel tips, there are many online resources, one of them is obviously from the Island.is . I am now reading A Girl’s Ride in Iceland by Mrs.(Ethel) Alec-Tweedie, Second Edition 1894, a free ebook downloaded from Amazon. I have little idea of what this book is about. But you can imagine there must be some interesting facts in the late 19th century discovered by this lady. The reviews of this book are all positive.

This is not a product review of the Sennheiser MKE400 microphone. I do not have the skill and technical equipment to test this small gear, nor a pair of good ears.

It is a merely a summary of impressions and a little comparison with some thoughts.

My initial objective was to get an compact external microphone for the Canon 6D for capturing some interviewing. The internal, monaural microphone on the camera body has its limitation. To capture video with good sound quality, I decided to mount an external microphone to the stereo jack. Two things are vital: small in size and reasonable priced. Here are the main features of the Sennheiser MKE400 microphone:

All-metal housing (except the hot shoe adpater)

More than 300 hours operating time (as stated in the product guide)

Power source: 1 x AAA size battery

Volume switch adjusts the sensitivity to cope with varying distances from sound source

Dimensions: 130 x 21 x 62 mm (W x H x D)

Weight: approx. 60 g

Price: AU$194 (discounted retail price spotted)

Some recommend the Røde VideoMic Pro, which is very close to the Sennheiser MKE400. But on paper there are some less competitive features:

Power source: 9v battery powered (70 hours as stated in the product guide)

Dimensions: 250 x 65 x 102 mm (W x H x D)

Weight: approx. 85 g

Price: AU$214 (discounted retail price spotted)

Both Røde and Sennheiser are famous for their audio products. From the specifications of these two microphones, they indeed go head to head and it is truly hard to tell the difference before you put them in the real world testing. You can view some discussions online or watch some comparisons on YouTube. I recommend the YouTube video produced by Photographer and filmmaker Dan Chung using the Sennheiser MKE400 microphone, which is very informative.

So far I have done small testings with the Canon 6D. But good results have been proven in some interview recordings with the Canon XA10.

If you are thinking of capturing videos in a concert or the wild with depth of sound from the natural environment, I guess the Røde Stereo VideoMic Pro may serve this purpose better.

Have you ever thought of being a Leica rangefinder camera user?

Have you ever thought of being a Leica rangefinder camera user?

(Sorry I don’t call the Leica M camera the mirrorless camera.)

Having just read Mark Dubovoy’s article posted on Luminous Landscape, I am thinking about the endless pursuit of the finest camera. Is the Leica M (Type 240) my next camera? It retains the old format, superbly made with some innovations at a glimpse. Given my Leica M9 has entered its third year, I may have a reason to justify this upgrade.

I have a long history of using a SLR or DSLR camera, mainly the Canon. When I received my first salary and decided to buy a camera to take photos in my graduation ceremony, I have only heard of Minolta, Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Olympus. Yes, all the Japanese brands. My university mate was using a Minolta X700. I did not know why I chose Canon but probably my dear friend wanted to have a chance to play around with it, sort of hands-on. So I ended up buying a Canon AE-1 Program with a 35-70 mm zoom lens.

My next Canon camera was a Canon New F-1, top of the range. It cost me nearly a whole month salary. Later I bought a FD 50 mm f/1.2L when I was more serious in photography and taking more rolls of film. So this has become my everyday camera since then. Now if I remember the equipment items I used in the past and compare them with the current outfit: the Leica M9 with the Summicron-M 50mm f/2.0, they are almost identical. So my question is: am I making progress or staying in the same?

We now apparently have better photo-taking tools, do we make better photography? Especially if you want to switch from a DSLR or mirrorless camera to the Leica rangefinder camera, you have to bear in mind missing the following features which are supposed very common nowadays:

The Leica rangefinder camera has no autofocus function.

The Leica rangefinder has no zoom lens (don’t expect a travel zoom)

The Leica rangefinder has very limited automatic exposure functions (only aperture priority)

The Leica rangefinder lenses has limited capability of taking close-ups (the closest distance is around 0.7m)

The Leica rangefinder has no image stabilising function (in camera or lens)

Is the new Leica M (Type 240) making a departure? Not really. However, the new Leica M has already set a new standard for the rangefinder camera. As we are reading growing numbers of reviews and user reports, I noticed the Leica M is not just a face-off. It is a big leap forward compared with the Leica M9. This has little to do with the outward appearances, although you still can spot the differences at the front and the rear. I have no dispute with the fact that the new M (Type 240) has a brand new internal: the 24MP Maestro CMOS sensor, the HD movie recording capability and the Live View display when taking video on the rear LCD monitor. The luminance noise and chroma noise of the new Leica M are also much better than those of the Leica M9 thanks to the new sensor. You can have the option of GPS and WiFi in the new handgrip. If you want to study further details, read the article called The M Delivers written by Michael J. Hussmann on the 3/2013 April issue of LFI magazine. So if you ask me to choose between the Leica M-E or the Leica M, I would suggest you to go for the latter, although there is a significant price difference. The Leica M is truly a flagship of Leica.

The Leica rangefinder is a camera not for everyone, not because of the price tag, but the style of taking photographs. It calls for a back-to-basic attitude to photography: why do I take this photograph and what does the subject mean to me? Many people collect the Leica rangefinder cameras for aesthetic design or investment. It is just a waste a time and money if you do not fully use this wonderful camera. I want to tell you honestly that I have been using my Leica M9 to take more photographs than using the Canons, and I enjoy every moment with the Leica rangefinder camera.

I am not sure if this quote is from Henri Cartier-Bresson. He once said, “Shooting with a LEICA is like a long tender kiss, like firing an automatic pistol, like an hour on the analyist’s (analyst?) couch.”

Amazing.

After using the Apple TV for a couple of days, I have likes and dislikes.

After using the Apple TV for a couple of days, I have likes and dislikes.

After setting the Apple TV up at home, I like the simple way it connects to the Internet. The small box size which makes it look elegant at home paired up with my TV. AirPlay mirroring the content (such as movies and news video) from your iOS devices is also fast and there has been no hassle and effortless. There is little in delay and it works excellently and effectively if you want to share things on your iOS devices to the large screen, saving a thousands words. The only thing I find the Apple TV provides limited free network channels. YouTube is the free channel I may often use but there are not many Australian free channels. The exception is probably the ABC iView app. I enjoy the latest TV episodes through Airplay. Of course you can rent or purchase TV series or movies through the Apple TV.

Another thing you have to consider is whether you need connecting the Apple TV with a wireless keyboard, if you have to type a lot in the search area such as finding your favourite singers and performances on YouTube. This is really a pain in the ass if you look for the characters and numbers using the 4-way controller on the remote scrolling up and down, right and left on the screen. Even annoying if you have typed in a wrong character…

If you want to know about some commonly asked questions about the Apple TV, check out this page.

At my workplace in the university, I tried setting up the Apple TV a few days ago. I had to admit it was not as easy as I thought and I have met many challenges. I am afraid I could not find out how it works properly. It is probably not the fault of this device. I reckon this is related to the WiFi security settings. When I set up the Apple TV to connect with the network available, they were connected but there was no AirPlay button shown on my iPad. It obviously means although the Apple TV and my iPad were sharing the same WiFi network, there was something else I have not configured properly, perhaps security or I may need to install a profile to get this done.

Technology brings much excitement, but it may not be able to give us instant solutions. I sometimes doubt whether it is wise not to jump too quickly on the wagon of the future. This is what I learn from Leonardo da Vinci:

Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else.

Is the Apple TV the best companion for eLearning? Do we, the Apple die-hard fans, blindly consider everything from Apple is cool?

Is the Apple TV the best companion for eLearning? Do we, the Apple die-hard fans, blindly consider everything from Apple is cool?

With the challenge from Samsung Android smartphones, is Apple done and losing its cool factor?

My observation and hands-on of Apple iOS devices such as the iPad and iPhone has already won my heart fast over the Androids in terms of the apps for education. I have firm belief that there are equally good educational apps on both iOS and Android. At the moment there are over 20,000 iOS apps listed for all kinds of learners whereas for Android, there are over 40,000 according to this source. But the advantage of iOS is its uniformity of the screen dimensions of the devices. For Android, some apps are unable to be installed on certain devices because of various dimensions and design. It is not surprising that in the case of iOS, many apps designed for iPad may not be used on iPhone too. The growing truth is that for learning, the iPad or Android tablets are more appropriate because of the bigger screen size.

Then there is a question of how to share the content of your device to the others, technically it is called mirroring. If you are a teacher or instructor, you want to share something instantly to a bigger screen like writing on a whiteboard viewed by all of the participants. This is crucial in student engagement. Tools like Reflector and Air Server are possible solutions as mentioned in this post by Greg Swanson to replace the electronic smart board. The four solutions: HDMI adaptor, Apple TV, Reflector and AirServer are capable of mirroring the content on your device to the screen. I wish to add the fifth solution if you want to connect to an external monitor through the more conventional VGA adapter but I have not yet confirmed this works. I can only confirm that the old VGA adapter for iPad 2 or 3rd generation does not work through the lightning to 30 pin adapter. Sadly I knew this after I have purchased the old VGA adapter in a bid it works for both the older iPad and the iPad 4. According to the guy I met in the Apple Store, I need to buy a Lightning to VGA adapter for the iPad 4. At the end I decided to try connecting all my iOS devices on an Apple TV. For the time being I do not expect there is a simple device which connects cross-platforms for iOS and Androids.

At the beginning I thought the Apple TV by name is only a device which connects your Apple devices and displays the contents of your iTunes library on your Smart TV. This is probably true. I have not been a frequent visitor of iTunes Store and my purchase history of music, TV shows and movies is almost zero. So last year when Apple had the annual discount sale, I missed a chance to buy this product to wait and see how it goes.

My next question is that I do not have a Smart TV and my aged Panasonic Viera LCD TV is too old for connecting gadgets. Surprisingly the Apple TV has no trouble to be set up by using a HDMI cable. By the time I discovered there was a simple manual at the bottom of the box, I have already completed the process on the screen of my LCD TV. By using AirPlay, I mirror the screen of my iPad through my home WiFi to the TV and I can also select what videos to show if there is an AirPlay icon available next to them.

In theory the Apple TV is very effective if you want to make use of this small box in the classroom connecting all iOS devices using the same WiFi channel (that is why it works so well at home). The pros are that you only need to bring this small Apple TV and set it up with active WiFi. Your students can show what is on the screen of their iOS device to the TV. But of course the cons are that it is for iOS only and you have to think of the solution for Androids users. For cross platform, the apps called AirServer or Reflector may be the solution. From the product comparison page of AirServer, it does have some advantages over Apple TV. Both AirServer and Reflector provides a commercial license for school or business that costs cheaper. I have seen the demonstration of both and they worked very similarly but occasionally there were some delays due to the WiFi connection.

But in terms of simplicity in a learning environment, there is nothing that beats the Apple TV.

The Leica Summicron-M 50 mm f/2.0 is still my all time favourite. It is a focal length built with the angle of viewing close to what you see with your eyes. The 28mm is slightly too wide in many situations and the focal length above 75 mm, the medium or tele, is too far from the subject. When I travel, the Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 is the widest lens so far when used to capture landscapes and streets. I have also used it for taking some indoor architecture such as in a terrace house. The Summicron-M 50 mm f/2.0 is my daily companion, carried in my messenger bag all the time, ready to shoot. The Leica Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5 is used for taking portraits and so far it handles really well in all my jobs. It renders very high resolution and excellent colour balance.

One thing I have to keep in mind all the time: the Leica M system is not ideal for taking close-ups. The closest distance for the Elmarit-M and Summicron-M is 0.7 mm and the Summarit-M is 1mm. But overall this is a decent closest distance. Everything has its limitation.

The featured image taken for this post was shot in a park. I was not sure if this area is a habitat for the rabbits but it was just amazing to see these two little lovely creatures. I took three shots from a distance for fear of losing the sight of them (the one at the background was running away). It was hard to focus the one in the foreground in the shade and I was not confident. I aimed at the ears of the rabbits. However, in the first two takes, the rabbit was not in focus, a bit blurry. The third one was better captured. Since the contrast between the light and the shade is so great, I have done some post processing on the original RAW in Adobe Lightroom enhancing the image: cropped the image, reduced the highlight and increased the brightness of the shadow area. I am still not very satisfied with the overall result.

Anyway, I have to put aside doing this lens review for the time being. The last thing I want to show you is a video below showing how to mount the lens hood (not included in the box, sold separately) on the Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5. Enjoy.

Taking images indoors with the Leica Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5 you need extra care: steady handheld skill and fast shutter speed. In fact, this applies not only to this telephoto lens, but also to every lens of similar focal length or higher. Also the depth of field counts. What making it more difficult to review whether the subject is in focus is the LCD monitor resolution. In the case of the Leica M9, you probably need to enlarge a bit in the playback of the images to check whether the subject is in focus. Nowadays most of the DSLRs can deliver a higher resolution of image on the rear LCD monitor. But on my Leica M9, the LCD monitor is only 2.5 inches wide with a resolution of 230,000 pixels. It is simply hard to ensure whether it is sharp or not. Of course you need to understand the Leica M9 is 3 years old.

Also bear in mind the Leica Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5 is actually not a newly released lens, although you may find it available new from the Leica store.

Described by Günter Osterloh in his book Leica M: Advanced Photo School, photography is writing with light. Without light, it is almost impossible to capture a subject. The camera and the lens must be made to capture the best possible photograph. Today as most of the cameras are equipped with good metering, getting correct exposure of an image is almost effortless. Accompanying with an excellent lens, you can get many rewarding images. To me it is vital to see how this lens performs as some say it is not as good as other non-Lecia Summarit-M Lenses. However, I have never tried any other 90mm M lenses so my user report is very personal.

In order to find out the resolution of this lens, I have taken some shots using the equipment set up as follows:
Lens: Leica Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5
Camera: Leica M9
Tripod: Gitzo
Other equipment: Shutter release
Distance to subject: 1m
Processing: Adobe Lightroom 4 converted from original DNG, no other retouching or sharpening

The following images are placed in the order of aperture value from wide open f/2.5 to f/16. You can see the center resolution from the center-cropped images for yourself.

As you can see from the images, this lens performs really good from wide open at f/2.5. Stepping down from f/4 onwards, this lens delivers excellent sharpness, colour and contrast.

My next post will display the resolution of the corners and some comparisons with the Canon EF 85 mm f1.8.

You can notice a significant increase in the overall weight of the Leica Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5 mounted on a Leica M9 body. Think of adding this lens to the Leica M9 (585g) body: the total weight of the whole camera becomes nearly 945g. It is indeed very close to a DSLR body such as the Canon 650D (575g) mounted with a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 (398g). The Leica M9 with the Summarit-M 90mm is obviously smaller in size but much more solid in both look and feel.

Handholding: Handholding a camera should not be a hard learning curve. Most DSLRs has a proper grip and one does not feel hard to grasp the body firm and rest your fingers on the right position of the shutter to ensure a smooth release. With a background of using DSLRs, switching to using a rangefinder is a different experience. I agree with Gütter Osterloh, in his book Leica M: Advanced Photo School, says, “A photographer has to be willing to pursue things.” (p. 293) Learning to hold a rangefinder camera like the Leica M is definitely a challenge. Some consider using the Tim Isaac’s Thumbs Up accessories on the Leica M camera body to help grasp firmly the camera. However, it does not help much to grasp well the camera mounted with heavier lenses such as the Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5. You notice it is not as tiny as other Summarit-M siblings such as 35 mm and 50 mm. Under this circumstance, I would suggest using the handgrip called Handgrip M (Part No: 14486 for the Leica M9, Leica M-E or Leica M9P). I do not think this handgrip is compatible to the latest Leica M (240) as it is slightly bigger than its predecessors.
Attaching this handgrip will obviously kill the minimalist outlook of the Leica, but this is the ultimate solution. In some aspects, I think it works better than the Thumbs Up.

The LCD screen and the viewfinder: Taking photos from the viewfinder of most DSLRs has one major issue: every time when you finish taking, your camera rear LCD screen smeared. Unless you don’t care much about it or you seldom review the photos you have taken. The grease from your nose is getting messy on the screen even when you clean frequently. The viewfinder of the Leica M9 and the latest Leica M is placed on the left and so the screen is free from being smeared. But the biggest issue is that the Leica M camera’s viewfinder does not change when a different lens is mounted on it. Its coverage remains the same although it is bright and sharp from the closest to the infinity. The lens is indicated by the luminous frame lines visible in the viewfinder and automatically adjusts by the 6-bit coding at the rear of the lens (if you select this option in the camera menu). There are three pairs of frames. The 90mm lens light frame is paired with 28mm. The 28mm one is at the outer and the 90mm is at the inner.
Rangefinding or manual focusing takes place in the center of the viewfinder. Some may find focusing the Leica Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5 a bit hard. My understanding is that if you can focus precisely with other M lenses, you won’t find exceptionally difficult for this lens. But you have to bear in mind that the hood blocks a small bottom right corner of the 90mm frame. Perhaps it is a flaw but it does not really matter.
Besides what you need to worry is the shallow depth of field on a telephoto lens if the aperture is large. The shutter speed and movement of the camera also affect whether the subject is in focus. It will be desirable if you use a higher ISO/high shutter speed. Don’t mount the camera on a tripod as the Leica M cameras have been designed for being light-weight, mobile and versatile.

Action: A lens is useless if you only discuss it on paper or store it in your dry box. After customising it with the Leica M9, the next move is to put the lens to the real world test. Stay tuned for my coming photos.
